GOTL | Dr Peter Li, Humane Society International

Dr Peter Li is China Policy Specialist at Humane Society International, associate professor at University of Houston-Downtown, and an expert on both the Yulin ‘Festival’ and the dog and cat meat trade. His research focuses on China’s animal welfare policies and the country’s animal protection movement at a time of rapid social transformation. Dr Li has published articles on China’s wildlife law enforcement, culture and human-animal relations, factory farming and animal welfare, as well as wildlife farming and cruelty, In this shortcast Dr Li strikes a notably optimistic tone, summing up questions from the media that he’s been answering in the run up to Yulin. GOTL | Vanessa Williams-Grey (WDC) Norway and Minke Whales

The Norwegian Government are planning to do ‘sound experiments’ on young Minke Whales captured as they move north to summer feeding grounds. This torture of whales is being done solely for the military and the oil and gas industries. Vanessa Williams-Grey, Policy manager at WDC – that’s Whale and Dolphin Conservation of course – wrote a blog on the issue and has also given us a powerful shortcast to post here. As well as slating the proposals – “there’s so much wrong with these experiments” – Vanessa suggests actions we can take, and we have posted links below to a petition and an email address for Norwegian Prime-Minister Erna Solberg.
